The Lake Region State College Softball team finds themselves in a new situation this season. When they take the field, they will do so with a target on their backs. As the reigning MonDak Conference Champions and Region XIII runner ups LRSC is sure to get the other teams best. Sense the return of the program, the Lady Royals have fought to find their footing and now that they have, they hope to keep making strides as a program.
This years team will have a few holes to fill, especially with two time All-MonDak Conference MVP Emma Gary and her sister Hanna, 2017 Region XIII MVP, no longer on the roster. The 2017 Lady Royals hit 50 homeruns in 36 games. The 2017 team finished the season in the top 15 in the NJCAA for homeruns. Coach Kory Boehmer still hopes to use the long ball but says, "We will need to wait and see what kind of team we are going to be this year. Every year is different, I think that will be something you can look forward to but we will play to our strengths no matter what those are." Two of the Lady Royals strengths this season are going to come on the mound in sophomore pitchers Amber Stewart and Gina Selfe. Amber had a 4.17 ERA in 72 innings last season while Gina had a 4.0 in 35 innings. Both are expected to be near the top of the conference. Coach Boehmer thinks they will also, "Make valuable contributions with their bats and in the field." Tai Yamamoto (catcher, 3B) is another player expected to contribute significantly. In 2017, she had 13 homeruns with a slugging percentage of .826 and a batting average of .391. Cherie Malacas will be returning as a starting middle infielder. She had 12 stolen bases, a batting average of .383 and a fielding percentage of .823. Rounding out the returning players are Madison Eriksson (OF), Krista Waldo, and Zoe Willis-Wildman. Madison returns after a two-year hiatus from the game after returning to advance her education career. Krista had a .709 slugging percentage with 4 homeruns in 2017. Zoe will provide stability in the outfield and help with the catching duties.
The newcomers expecting to make an impact for the team are Sadie Schilling (IF) and Precious Rawlins (OF). Coach Boehmer said, "Both come in with years of experience, athletic ability, and highly skilled. We are also looking forward to seeing how well Madison Foss, Caitlyn Stuart, Kendra Karl and Alyssa Moser perform." Another newcomer for the Lady Royals will be assistant coach Rob McIvor. He brings over 25 years of playing experience to the team as well as valuable experience of coaching high school.
The Lady Royals softball team will kick off their season in Rosemount, MN when they compete in the Irish Dome for 6 games in 2 days. You can catch LRSC at home for the first time on Friday March 30th and Saturday March 31st when they take on Dakota County Technical College in back to back double headers.
