Lake Region State College Rallies to Defeat NDSU in Overtime Thriller
January 24, 2025 In an intense Friday night matchup, the Lake Region State College Royals women's hockey team edged out the North Dakota State University Bison 4-3 in a shootout after a hard-fought battle at the H.A Thompson & Sons Arena, in Fargo North Dakota.
The Bison came out strong in the first period, striking early with a goal just 1:20 into the game. Ellie Zowin found the back of the net, assisted by Sophie Steindl and Shelby Julien, setting the tone for NDSU. Three minutes later, Mallory Heder capitalized on an opportunity and extended the Bison's lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal.
Lake Region responded in the second period, cutting the deficit to one when Julia Lone scored just 1:50 in, assisted by Veronica Asquith. However, the Bison answered back as Brooke Bennett scored unassisted, restoring a two-goal cushion. The Royals refused to back down, keeping the pressure on, and entered the third period trailing 3-2.
With just six minutes remaining in regulation, Sierra Raatz stepped up for Lake Region, netting the game-tying goal to send the contest into overtime.
In overtime, Veronica Asquith delivered for the Royals, set up by Julia Lone sealing the 4-3 victory over the Bison. NDSU took three penalties throughout the game, while Lake Region stayed disciplined, taking just one. The Royals' resilient effort marked a big win as they continue their season, showcasing their ability to battle back and finish strong under pressure.
Lake Region State College Dominates in Saturday's Rematch Against NDSU
January 25, 2025 The Lake Region State College Royals bounced back in style on Saturday, securing a commanding 7-3 victory over the North Dakota State University Bison in the second game of their weekend series. The Royals came out firing on all cylinders, overwhelming the Bison with a high-energy performance that saw them take control early and never look back.
Veronica Asquith opened the scoring for Lake Region at the 8-minute mark, assisted by Tatum Provencher. The Royals' momentum continued into the second period, where they netted three consecutive goals. The first came just two minutes in from Arianna Haraseth, assisted by Asquith. Julia Lone followed with a goal 1:30 later, assisted by Haraseth and Asquith, before Lone struck again five minutes later, with Sierra Raatz providing the assist.
The Bison responded late in the second period, with Bella Smooth scoring unassisted, followed by Payton Hareland who capitalized on an assist from Rebecca Dawson, cutting the Royals' lead to 4-2 heading into the third period.
The third period was marred by emotional play and an avalanche of penalties, including a major penalty from NDSU's Payton Hareland. Lake Region capitalized on the major penalty, scoring three power-play goals in quick succession. Sierra Raatz opened the power-play scoring, followed by Ella Holkesvig, and Julia Lone completed her hat trick with a third goal, pushing the score to 7-2 in favor of the Royals.
Hareland added a final goal for NDSU in the latter half of the third period, but it wasn't enough as the Royals closed out the game with a dominant 7-3 scoreline.
The game was highly charged, with 19 penalties between the two teams, as emotions ran high throughout the contest. Despite the heavy penalty minutes, Lake Region's power play proved to be a decisive factor, converting on several opportunities to put the game out of reach. The Royals' offense was led by Julia Lone, who earned a hat trick, while Asquith and Haraseth played pivotal roles in setting up scoring chances. With this win, Lake Region further cemented their dominance in the series, sweeping the weekend with a resounding victory.
On Sunday February 2nd, the Royals travel to Bottineau, North Dakota to take on the Dakota College of Bottineau Lumberjacks at 10:00AM.
