Lake Region State College Women’s Hockey Signs Mailyn Illson
The Lake Region State College Royals women's hockey program is excited to announce the commitment of defenseman Mailyn Illson from Thunder Bay, Ontario, for the 2025–26 season.
Standing at 5'3" and shooting right-handed, Illson has developed into a versatile defender with more than a decade of experience on the blue line. She has spent the last 11 years competing in boys' leagues while also representing numerous summer teams across Canada and the United States. Most recently, she played for the VP Bearcats, helping the team to an impressive 20-5-3 record and a second-place overall finish. Illson and the Bearcats also celebrated a championship win in Madison, Wisconsin.
Off the ice, Illson excelled academically, graduating from Seventh Fire Secondary School and its hockey academy program, where she was recognized with a STEM Award for her achievements.
Head Coach Sawyer Diseth spoke highly of Illson's impact and potential with the Royals:
"Mailyn is the type of player every coach values on the blue line. Her ability to play both sides of defense, combined with her speed and decision-making, makes her a reliable force in our zone and a dynamic threat when transitioning up the ice. She has the skill to break the puck out cleanly, and the confidence to join the rush with our forwards. More importantly, she carries herself with strong character, and I'm excited to see the impact she'll make both on and off the ice for our program."
Illson will bring her two-way style of play and leadership qualities to a Royals roster that continues to grow in depth and talent.
