Lake Region Star Brady Wicklund Takes Next Step, Signs with Pro FPHL Team Watertown Wolves
After a record-breaking career at Lake Region State College, forward and assistant captain Brady Wicklund has taken the next step in his hockey journey by signing a professional contract with the Watertown Wolves of the Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL).
Wicklund, a native of International Falls, Minnesota, capped off his sophomore season at Lake Region by finishing 5th in points across ACHA Division II, tallying 61 points in 35 games. His 29 goals and 32 assists not only shattered the Royals' single-season scoring record but also solidified him as one of the most dynamic forwards in the country.
A Journey Fueled by Persistence
After completing his sophomore campaign, Wicklund set his sights on advancing to the next level. He explored ACHA Division I opportunities but couldn't find the right fit. He also drew interest from a couple of NCAA programs, but after weighing his options, Wicklund ultimately decided the best step for his career was to sign professionally.
Driven by his ambition, he spent the offseason sending hundreds of emails to coaches and programs around the country. That persistence led to a critical reconnection. In the summer of 2025, Wicklund reached out to his former coach, Luke Judson, who had recently been named head coach of the Fort Frances Lakers, Wicklund's former junior team. Judson connected him with a sports management agent in Toronto. With their guidance and networking, Wicklund earned a professional opportunity with Watertown.
The Wolves, who finished last season with a 23–23 record before clinching a playoff spot, are eager to add Wicklund's scoring touch and leadership to their roster.
Wicklund Reflects on His Path
In reflecting on his journey, Wicklund emphasized the importance of focus and perseverance:
"Focus on what you love. Everyone has an opinion, and if you wouldn't take advice from them, don't worry about their opinion. Don't give up on yourself, and keep being persistent with your goals."
Looking ahead, he acknowledged the areas he's concentrating on to elevate his game:
"For me, it's about improving my physical side, bumping players off the puck and taking it. It's also about the small details, continuing to be a student of the game, and working on my overall hockey IQ."
Wicklund also credited his time in Devils Lake for shaping both his playing career and personal growth:
"I want to thank the entire coaching staff at Lake Region State College and my time as a student there. It gave me the foundation to take this next step, and I'm grateful for everything the school and hockey program have done for me."
Coach's Perspective
"Brady Wicklund is a fantastic hockey player and student who always worked hard on and off the ice. It's wonderful to see him get a chance to move on with his hockey career," said Lake Region State College Head Coach Brady Stein.
A Milestone for the Program
Wicklund's signing marks a proud moment for Lake Region State College, demonstrating the program's ability to develop talent capable of reaching the professional ranks. His journey from International Falls, to Lake Region, and now to the professional stage serves as an inspiration for current and future Royals.
